Usually offloading experts to system RAM. DDR4 has gone up a lot, but on a 8-channel used Xeon motherboard or whatever, you can get tolerable mem bandwidth out of it.

Unfortunately it seems like people who prompt slop can't be bothered to dogfood it... or maybe pigfood it?
"From scratch in C" means literally nothing here. LLMs can output C too. It may or may not be safe, efficient C, but writing C that compiles is trivial. Prompting "write it in C" poses no greater difficulty than any other language.
I buy DeepSeek and MiMo directly from them, on the assumption they're better at it, have a vested interest in me having a good experience and they'll get caching and other stuff right. They're also cheap enough that it's unlikely you'll find a much better deal on those models.
I'm likely to also add a small Kimi Code subscription, as the model looks very promising and I don't see any reason to support proprietary US models from companies I don't really trust overopen Chinese models. I've opted not to get a z.AI subscription, though, as the price/performance ends up not being great, because GLM chews a lot more on the problem so its actual price per task is roughly the same as the big guys. The same can't be said of DeepSeek. It's notably cheaper per task, especially when comparing API rates to Anthropic or OpenAI.
I use GLM 5.2 through open router, and it's much much less expensive than Anthropic/GPT5.5.
I do app development with it and I spend maybe $0.20-$0.50 per task that I work on expanding the app where Claude sonnet will come out to $1-2 for the same work, and Claude Opus $5-10

Choosing open models is more about long term availability and avoiding censorship than being free. For 90% of us it doesn't make sense to invest in hardware for $5-100.000 to run these models when API prices are this low
Well, it's not that hard: just give the LLM a user-scoped access token, same as if the user themselves were asking their own LLM to act on their behalf.
Basically, just like we don't show users information they shouldn't be able to see, and don't let them take actions they shouldn't be able to take -- we can use exactly those same explicit mechanisms (scopes, roles, permissions) to limit what the LLM can see and do.
The LLM could try to do more than what's allowed, but they get shot down with an access denied message just like anyone else.
The anti pattern is to think that you can reimplement access control with prompt engineering and give the LLM root access. That is doomed to fail every time.
It is already here. Not humanoid (yet, but it's in the works) but tracked robots with bolted on machine guns have both held and captured positions in UA.
To be honest, I'd be fine with a lot of stuff here but the problem is that mainstream robots are heavy and I fear them falling on my children. Children are unpredictable to machines but most parents find that their behaviour is anticipatable. The sample rate on our sensors and the inference rate in our intelligence is just orders of magnitude beyond the state of the art robots. I am just far more sophisticated and capable right now. My hope is that a sufficiently lightweight device is possible here though I can't see how given the weight requirements of batteries.
