A skill one must develop is identifying no-win-scenario tasks that can be avoided. POCs are often such tasks.
A teammate and I got roped into some POC where everyone in the room seemed to silently agree the product was not fit for purpose. The meetings went in circles of seemingly trying to find anything they could do to use the product, rather than assessing it objectively on the use case the vendor pitched.
Behind the scenes it turned out the product was being pushed by someone seniors brother. So the thing was getting bought no matter what. What they were really looking for was the patsy to own finding any sort of use case for the stupid thing, integrating it and owning it.
Obviously a "the product cannot fail, it can only be failed" scenario. Run run run away.
I’m not a typographic nut (though I care about it more than the average American), but one of the worst trends I’ve seen is to use the square root character (√) as a checkmark (). I’ve even seen Apple do it. It doesn’t help that the checkmark glyph is generally terrible, and at least on a Mac, the shortcut (⌥+V) exists for square root, and happens to be something a Windows user might accidentally find when transitioning to Mac key bindings while the checkmark requires either knowing true code point and how to enter that in or going to the Emoji & Symbols panel.
For 99.9% of people, as long as the meaning is clear, they’ll never even register that the wrong code point, wrong symbol, or even wrong formatting was used. While I prefer correctness when possible, I’ve come to terms that others only care about communicating their intent.

I think I've seen it the other way. I told an AI I had data coming in at some fixed, slow rate that I wanted displayed. It did the job but only for that case. It literally put a polling loop to catch one sampling at that duration. I've noticed it gives me very specific code to the exact data, or wildly complicated code for all possible data to ever exist. Finding the middle ground has been my challenge

You can also look at lots of events that trigger wars where the side looking to get into the war seems to have a very convenient tragic even to validate their entry into a war.
Or situations where people make other dependent on them so they can constantly save them from not being able to be independent.
Or people who like to pick fights try to make it so someone will do something that will unwittingly offend them.
The world is full of setups, many subconsciously created, so that one person can be the hero or main character in their own narrative.

Plenty of people run ad-blocking DNS on their router, or mesh VPN software. Handy for devices where you can't install an ad blocker directly, and for working around CGNAT issues due to IPv4 exhaustion.

Military, prison, servitude, employment, even the tyranny of "the man of the house" - all these hierarchical authoritarian social structures (whether or not they were ever noble or righteous, or useful) have improved ethically over time in the lives of those subjected to the violence of these systems - the conditions used to be a lot worse, across the board.
Labor is not solved in terms of ethics, but it's a lot better now.

But the last pass and review must always be a human. Everything posted by an LLM under your name is still under your name and you are liable for every single word. It's about the outcome and everybody who uses it is responsible for it.
What is the point of this. I get llm to draw charts using plotly, matplotlib, echarts, etc all the time. There will be always a better way but what does this buy us?
This bug is almost certainly not a bug in ripgrep or Rust or musl or any user code at all. Maybe one could complain that musl is using an inferior allocator that is freeing then immediately reallocating the same address.

Yes. I’d argue inflation metrics are about as easy to fuck with as any emissions math I’ve seen. That doesn’t make either fundamentally wrong. But if one is irredeemably wrong, so is the other.

Global gross tonnage is growing [1]. On the sea, your correlation works because that fleet runs on fossil fuels. If you were trying to measure Chinese economic activity using fossil-fuel metrics, on the other hand, you’d fail.
